Latino group smears Ed Gillespie in racist ad


Everyone who disagrees with the Latino Victory Project is Hitler. At least that’s what the group’s most recent political advertising suggests.

Just in time for Halloween and pulled from the stuff that feeds irrational fears, the clip is called “American Nightmare.” Airing a week ahead of the Virginia governor race, it casts Ed Gillespie voters as the rednecks from “Deliverance” — evil killers hell-bent on murdering anyone who doesn’t accept their way of life.

A young Latino boy runs for his life from a speeding black pickup with a Tea-Party license plate, a Confederate Flag flapping in the wind, and a faceless white man behind the wheel. Each time the truck guns its engine, the boy runs past another minority who sprint along in terror. Eventually they’re trapped in an alley without an exit. The kids are as good as dead because obviously being Republican means being bloodthirsty.

Except no, no it doesn’t.

While the advertisement ends with a shot of the pimple-faced neo-Nazis marching on Charlottesville, it doesn’t mention how Gillespie has unequivocally condemned all forms of white supremacy. As James Geraghty was quick to point out, before most of America even knew about the neo-Nazis and their activities, Gillespie had already condemned them. The Republican candidate denounced them by 8:30 a.m. the next morning.

But the Latino Victory Project can’t be bothered with those facts. “We will not shy away from calling racism for what it is,” they wrote in a statement. “Our community deserves champions. That’s why we’re in this fight. We won’t stop.”

Won’t stop until when though? When Gillespie is elected? The Latino Victory Project continue to miss the lesson of 2016: Maligning voters on the Right won’t keep them home. It does the exact opposite, driving an angry and offended electorate to the polls. And after antagonizing conservatives during the presidential election, Democrats continue to do the same thing in Virginia.

If the Latino Victory Project was concerned with actual racism, they wouldn’t cut a tasteless ad that conjures up images of the crushed body of Heather Heyer, the woman run down by a white supremacist in Charlottesville. They would, instead, call out Democrat Ralph Northam who whitewashed the picture of his black running mate from campaign literature at the request of unions.

That’d require formulating an actual argument, something they clearly can’t do. So until then, the Latino Victory Project will just call everyone they disagree with Hitler.
