A Pakistani terrorist in police custody escaped this morning
as he was brought to a Srinagar hospital for a routine medical check-up. Initial reports said the prisoner, Naveed, snatched a weapon from policemen accompanying him and opened fire. One policeman has died, while another is injured, a senior officer said. Naveed still has the weapon he snatched, the police said. They are investigating reports that he was helped by accomplices who were already positioned inside the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital as he was brought there by a police party from the Rainawari central jail along with five other prisoners this morning.
The hospital has been cordoned off but it is not clear whether Naveed is still inside or has managed to flee the premises. Emergency services are functioning inside the hospital and the police said that while they are focusing on capturing the prisoner, they are also trying to ensure that patients at the hospital are not disturbed.
Gunshots were fired at Srinagar’s Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital, killing a police constable.
Naveed was arrested in 2014 for killing a policeman near a court house in Pulwama, about 36 km from Jammu and Kashmir capital Srinagar.
